Plasma vs. LCD

The debate over plasma vs. LCD will continue among television enthusiasts for the rest of this decade. For the time being, it looks as though plasma is the more attractive option. The largest LCD monitors available currently are about 30 inches, which limits the appeal for people who want a spectacular home theater. Also, Plasma Televisions are significantly cheaper than LCD displays of the same or even smaller size. Plasma displays can be viewed from any angle, unlike LCDs, which look best when viewed straight-on.

However, if you leave your television on almost constantly, especially for business use, even today's LCDs would be a better choice than a plasma television. LCDs use up a great deal less energy than Plasma Televisions, and they last over twice as long. They also do not experience the "burnout" that eventually affects all plasma TVs. Furthermore, the size and price advantage of Plasma Televisions won't last forever. Within 2-3 years, researchers expect that 42" plasmas and LCDs will be similarly priced enough to compete against each other. The general recommendation seems to be "buy plasma this time, LCD next time."
