Television History

Television has nearly seventy-five years of history behind it, dating from the mechanical televisions of the 1930s to the plasma and LCD televisions of today. After 1935, the first electrical televisions were developed by Philo T Farnsworth and RCA. Virtually all television broadcasting was halted during World War II, but after the war television was truly born. In 1948 and 1949, the flourishing economy and new consumer culture caused a huge boom in television sales. On January 1, 1954, the Tournament of Roses Parade became the first coast-to-coast broadcast in full color.

At the University of Illinois in 1964, the plasma display panel was invented. That first transmission of a single point of light via plasma technology paved the way for the next great leap in the history of television. Today, television has become a widespread force in entertainment, education, and information. It is rare to find a living room or a motel room without some sort of television installed. The average modern American watches television between two to five hours a day. Does this sound like anyone you know?
